It's my birthday! It's one of my favourite days of the year, so in the blog post, I thought I would share with you why.
Birthdays are up there as one of my favourite days of the year! Ever since I was a kid I loved birthdays, it didn’t even have to be mine and I got so excited! It’s the one day of the year where we can truly just celebrate ourselves and each other.
As I got older though, I realized that there’s a lot of people who don’t share the same excitement that I do about birthdays. “It’s just another day,” “No one cares about it,” “My friends aren’t around to celebrate,” are some of the phrases I often hear when discussing the topic. I understand. It’s hard to find time as adults to take a moment to celebrate ourselves and it’s sometimes discouraging when it seems you have no one to celebrate with.
But my excitement around the day, I’ve realized goes far deeper than just the presents and the cake. I can’t help but think of all the people who did not get to celebrate a birthday this year. Many never got the chance to be 24. We often forget that life is cruel and short and many are not given the privilege to live as long as I have. I feel like I owe it a) to myself but b) to those people, because they aren’t able to celebrate.
I believe every age, every milestone, every year that passes is a big deal. For you have been on this Earth for so many years and have experienced so many things. Some great, some awful, some tragic. You have struggled and persevered and worked hard, these are all things worth celebrating.
If you aren’t a fan of birthdays, I hope this pushes you to re-think. Let the people that love you celebrate you, shit let you celebrate YOU. Celebrate all the things you’ve done and all the things you still have yet to do.
I’m grateful for all the years that I’ve lived, the places that I’ve seen and the people that I’ve met along the way. I’m so excited for all the experiences that are still to come in the future.
